How To Recover MS Windows Data After Linux Install Corrupted Windows Partition?
Question by Stochastic | Posted in Desktops
I installed OpenSuse Linux 11.1 on my calamitous drive, and the installer set aside a large chunk of the hard drive for windows. After installing linux and restarting, windows was no longer a boot chance (under grub). Also, the partition for windows was no longer readable. I tried to regain the data using data recovery software without any luck. From another windows machine the recovery software says that it cannot study the data.
Answer: I notion of what happened was that grub missed adding windows to the boot options. Here is a tie up to do that. It will not affect anything on the windows partition. Even though the instructions are written for ubuntu they will work for grub in customary.
This is assuming that windows and suse are on the same drive, called /dev/hda, windows is hda1 and suse hda2 and above. You will also privation your password for suse.

Which Linux File System Is Best For Fast File Recovery And Which One Is Best For Data Integrity?
Question by Ericson A | Posted in Other - Computers
Answer: XFS is alleged to have a very fast file system checking ability. I don't know this first hand, I do run XFS on a production server, but I have yet to run fsck on it though. Any of the in output journaling file systems provided very good data integrity. These include Ext3, XFS, JFS, and Reiserfs.
Lost Data On Hard Disk On Installing Linux Ubuntu?
Question by koti | Posted in Software
My familiar today installed Linux on his xp based system. He followed the specified instructions but ended up formatting all his stony disk.
He is trying to recover that back so can any one suggest any recovery tools that he can use to get back atleast some of his data??
And he currently has Ubuntu installed, so the instrument must be Linux compatible.
Answer: It needn't be "Linux compatible", since you can't if possible restore data while Linux is on top of it.
TestDisk is probably the best utility I've come across. It can restore the cell table that was previously on the drive. When you do this, any data that wasn't in the area that Ubuntu placed it's system files on should be recoverable.
TestDisk can be found on many bizarre recovery disks (admittedly, mostly Linux, but also some DOS). It can be found on the

I've had my laptop since Christmas, and I recently kicked miasmal vista into the trash and put windows 7 beta on. [Don't even think about saying that that's my problem, because it is much more responsible than vista!!] So anyway, recently my computer wouldn't boot after left unplugged and had the battery die, and I employed an Ubuntu Live CD to try to copy my data out, but It was unable to mount the drive and said something about ntfs inconsistencies, corruption, or armaments failure [please! no!

Question by cheesealwaysgood | Posted in Laptops & Notebooks
My linpus linux came with a recovery DVD, which was productive BUT. There is no DVD slot in the netbook!!! So how do I recover it! Btw, if you're wondering why I'm asking how to recover it, it's because I accidentally downloaded a newer kind a firefox that doesn't work, therefore deleting the old one, so I have no browser...
Answer: 1. You should be qualified to go to the menu item Add or Remove Programs and remove the new version of firefox and then inaugurate the old version.
2. You could use the add/remove to install another browser like opera.
3. You could beg, borrow, or buy and extraneous dvd drive that attaches to the usb port to use the recovery dvd.
Good luck
